12:00 pm
breaking news this hour on r t turkey says the syrian plane intercepted on route from moscow was carrying russian made munitions despite russia's denial of any involvement in the flights alleged arms supplies. they pointed their guns at the un got those put the solute ground. those on board that plane tell us see they were threatened and humiliated by turkish authorities during the stop in ankara. also this hour a yemeni security official working for the u.s. embassy is assassinated in the capital in the latest incident signaling al qaeda is
12:01 pm
on the rise in the region. hello very good evening i'm kevin zero in this is r.t. it's now eight pm dramatic development in the last breaking news just mentioned there turkey now saying the syrian bound passenger plane that was forced to land in turkey was carrying russian made music munitions moscow earlier said the planes confiscated cargo was not manufactured in russia have sixteen fighter jets intercepted that flight from moscow bound for damascus last night which was carrying thirty seven people let's get up to speed of the teachers are still coming in in the last half hour but tom buttons of course the latest for us hi there tom the situation appears be getting more tense now rather the whole incident doesn't it. yes kevin another twist in this anger. the dispute over this
12:02 pm
plane forced to land when it entered turkish airspace russia had previously said when it transpired but turkey had forced the plane to land because it wanted to search it looking for possible weapons or munitions russia had said that any military equipment on board the plane was not made in russia now the turkish prime minister has directly contradicted that and said that they have found munitions on the plane that were made in russia the plane was on route from moscow to damascus when in what is an unusual style of making a plane land turkish f. sixteen fighter jets arrive next to the plane and as route as syria says without warning they very harshly forced this plane to land at ankara and then turkish security services boarded the plane handcuffed the crew and began to search for
12:03 pm
whatever they were looking for on the plane r.t. managed to talk to a flight engineer on the syrian plane earlier and he told us how the him and the rest of the crew and the passengers were in his view treated excessively harshly. ok we'll be getting more on this with george kenney a former u.s. foreign service officer will bit later be crossing live to washington d.c. but for now tom thanks so much for bringing us up to date with what you know. things are far from car elsewhere in the middle east today yet in yemen a security official of the u.s. embassy also coordinated anti terror work with yemeni authorities has been shot dead washington's increasingly acknowledging the rise of terror and the lack of security in the region our teacher in english because across that. security official who was on his way to work to the u.s. embassy was shot dead in
12:04 pm
a drive by incident now the yemeni officials are saying that this particular incident has the fingerprints of al qaida all over it now many may seem to ask why it is that al qaeda still seem to be so powerful even after the death of its leader osama bin laden back in two thousand and eleven a lot of very small terrorist organizations which existed in knowledge just in the middle east but also of course in pakistan and afghanistan in the northern africa region the so-called islamic magreb all of these are going to now trying to latch on to and they want to be filled with this large very well known terrorist organization and they are continuing their operations on the ground in these countries in a very vast area just recently u.s. military official who was working as the head of the military security team in libya has said that. unfortunately is alive and well and very much kicking in the country and he did say that unfortunately after the. qaddafi things have just
12:05 pm
gotten worse now a lot of analysts are saying that this seems to be the habit that united states has gotten into they are aligning themselves with the rebel fighters in various countries which are trying to depose all of these so-called dictatorships this was the case in libya of course this was. unfortunately a lot of times the u.s. seems to disregard any voices of concern that a lot of these rebel fighters who are fighting against the regime actually are fighting alongside with al qaida members unfortunately once the u.s. does not. officials disregard these warnings they find themselves in hot water like they did in libya where u.s. ambassador was killed in what is now confirmed as an attack specific lead on a u.s. officials. that attack was thoroughly discussed at the u.s. congressional hearing that found security of the mission highly inadequate but retired cia officer ray mcgovern says that while congressman look for weak spots in
12:06 pm
guarding american missions in the middle east the failing to get to the root of the problem this is a political carnival this is represented trying to make political points now they're trying to get hillary clinton for a lack of understanding about security that that's not where they should try to. get the request because the word she and others in libya the problem here is not getting to the bottom of the thing the bottom of the thing is these seem congressman ok they are the they forgot their constitutional duty in insisting that before we went to war in libya the congressional vote they ducked that and the result is the people they kill are equipment and others think they can fix things boys and armors over a country. or right now as promised more on our top story let's talk to george
12:07 pm
kelly former u.s. foreign service officer is joining us on the line there from washington d.c. george hi there just want to remind our viewers if they're just joined us about our breaking news this hour and there's been a development on this serve syrian airplane that was the force to land last night turkey saying in the last hour that that syria passenger plane was carrying confiscated cargo that was manufactured in russia moscow saying it's not before that this story is escalating tonight let's get your thoughts on it i mean russia's got long standing contracts with damascus that are fully in line with international law so conceivably what might be the point of trying to expose some hidden agenda here what's it all about do you think. well it's all about. what happens in syria i'm not sure exactly what the details are on the plane though if the turks have got something they should show people what it is instead of just saying that they've got something and i thought that the russian argument was
12:08 pm
fairly sensible that. since russia and syria have military agreements that if they were sending the quid meant that they would send it on a regular military cargo plane so i'm not quite sure what the turks or after if it was a quick minute if perhaps it was an individual they were after i just don't know and i'm not going to accept what the turks are saying until they can show some evidence for for their complaint. but the problem really is. of the for the problem really is syria what do people do about syria and if countries outside of the united states are looking to washington for guidance the fact is they're not going to get any because at the moment we're in the middle of a very heated presidential election campaign nobody in the oval office is really paying serious attention to syria and so the bureaucracy is continuing to do what it does and that is to have tactical moves at the margins to respond to a plane being forced down there were sponsor refugees in this and that the next
12:09 pm
thing one tactical move after another but there's no strategy bureaucracy will continue to grind on diplomats people in the pentagon in their experience in the last twenty years a whole generation of officers have known almost nothing but a war in the middle east as far as they're concerned war is a permanent feature of the middle east at least until all the oil is gone so if anybody outside of washington wants some help from washington and defusing the crisis i'm afraid they'll be disappointed you know just pointing out again here that you know russia's repeatedly stressing that. damascus are in line with international law as you have been saying you've talked about what american reaction is i wonder whether what's happening in america is. affecting what turkey is doing right now and the timing of all what's happened over the last twenty four hours do you think is there any connection there maybe. well i had to be honest i
12:10 pm
really think you're going to search in vain for some kind of a rational coherent thought through and consistent policy. reaction from washington as i say the political people in the oval office have checked out they're just not here and i don't think that you're going to find very many adults in charge of either the state department or the pentagon so whatever it is that we're doing we're reacting on a piecemeal basis mr obama look think of it this way he doesn't want to do anything that's going to expose him to charges that he's weak he doesn't want to do anything that's going to expose him to charges that he was weak in the vents in benghazi so he he's not he's not going to take them to the center the sensible step would be to go with russia with china and try to find some way of defusing the situation it's a moderately serious situation in syria to say the risk of.
12:11 pm
bad things happening on a scale of one to ten would be about a five that's quite serious but you're just not going to get a sensible coherent strategic response to this from washington how do these allegations today from the turkish prime minister. sit when there are reports that syrian rebels were previously getting heavy arms via to kish territory. they probably are. again it's a mess because everybody in a in a small sense is thinking that they're doing the rational thing we've seen this in history repeatedly notably in the first world war but when you have a lot of little actors all trying to do what seems rational to them they make a lot of little mistakes that can compound into a very very big mistake that's much bigger than the little mistakes and the risk is that if syria blows up and the areas the countries around it start to become
12:12 pm
destabilized we don't know nobody knows kevin well what could happen and so the prudent thing to do is to try to keep the situation under control and to reduce tensions if assad were to leave for example to moscow that would help but the only way to get something like that to happen is if washington and moscow were to cooperate at the at the moment they're not cooperating i mean if you look at the. the the none lucar arms control agreement that has been the disposed of apparently let's ashame is a very important agreement that worked very well for many years you know relations at the moment are very good and and a lot of that most of it in my view is our fault george while you're on the line. capacity as a former u.s. and foreign service officers i wonder where this information came last night about the syrian air a three twenty there are reports that the u.s. passed information about the syrian plane to take before it was forced to correct
12:13 pm
what do you think about that. look when your guess is as good as mine it could have been an electronic intercept that could have been human intelligence i don't know. you know nobody outside of a small number of people would know the answer that question and they're there they're not going to be talking. ok if if you thought george kennan fully u.s. foreign service very pleased in the london thanks thanks coven. this is our team from moscow news continues in full with me kevin owen after this break.
12:14 pm
it always amazes me the lengths that people go to for things that are pointless people camped out for a week waiting for a new i phone that will be archaic by next year when the next one comes out every black friday many thankfully not all americans celebrate this holiest of shopping days by waiting outside of a wal-mart in the early morning to fight over trendy plastic gifts for their children that they're too young to appreciate hey even i'm willing to sometimes wake up early in the morning to drive downtown and pay twenty five bucks for
12:15 pm
parking to watch a football game under cations but just imagine a world where we actually were willing to wake up early and stand a big crowd for something say more important than some stupid gizmo or the sake of our favorite sports team just imagine iraq and that world would be yeah maybe standing around some protester collecting signatures won't do anything we can't be naive enough to think that big corporations will bow to ten people with signs bought spending days worshiping at the altar of the i phone it's certainly won't improve your country but that's just my opinion.
12:16 pm
well again this is r.t. with me kevin owen it's quarter past eight moscow time next almost junk that's the grim verdict on spain's credit rating coming from the influential agency standard and poor's in the latest blow than to the cash strapped economy s. and p's downgraded madrid's debt score by two notches but the pain in spain runs deeper than the downgrade with rage in dublin this in a mountain of debt which is said to rise even more madrid recently announced a slew of new cuts and tax hikes in a bid to cut the deficit miguel at home or rather the spanish journalist and writer he told us during years of economic woes the eve been failing to offer an effective remedy to madrid. the problem is political is not it's not the economy of course the economy doesn't look very good but the problem in europe is that the european union doesn't work as a natural political union and. the catch is that their opinion can offer instead all for well doing some soul searching and trying to think how to
12:17 pm
make these mechanism work and i by mechanism i mean the european union we behave us different countries which yes of course we are part of the same currency but dr saul we look for ourselves and i think it's not where they are not offering real solutions just well remedies to to kick the can down the road as they say they call them in the cove then the disturbed the saving spain but over in britain the prime minister is convinced it is the right row. for the u.k. it was bad news for anyone expecting to loosen up in the near future too because the i.m.f. sworn in with the u.k. will miss its deficit targets this year nigel farage is leader of the u.k. independence party he says david cameron's policies are not bringing any meaningful change to the recession ravaged economy there. you know when david cameron talks about austerity what he fails to tell you is that we continue every year to run a massive budget deficit and by the end of his five years as prime minister the
12:18 pm
national debt in the u.k. will increase by forty percent so i think we're having an entirely false debate david cameron is calling the british public into thinking that he's actually really cutting back at the levels of debt in our country and it's not true i think that the david cameron and george osborne combination. put together a coalition telling us they were going to deal with debt in this country they have absolutely failed to do so they haven't dealt with the deficit they haven't got growth coming back into the british economy i don't think the thing is a dramatic failure unless things turn around but i think the conservative party is in for a really terrible result in twenty fifty that the next general election. we're reporting tonight italy's leaders have been showing that mafia powerful but room friends didn't help one city council in the south that's been dissolved by the government because of connections reporting but i don't lie and also there to be in the sky the. drugs we report of russian scientists are planning to use satellites
12:19 pm
to pinpoint inducive narcotics. but the middle east now that we're syria might be facing trouble not just stone its borders with turkey because u.s. troops are in jordan in what's become the biggest fixed deployment of american force in the region since the end of operations in libya the pentagon citing the danger of violence spilling over and monitoring syria's chemical weapons stockpile what is going to each account has more on the move and the intended message. according to defense secretary leon panetta they send the troops to syria jordan border in case violence escalates in syria and spills over the border leon panetta did not go into details as to how many troops and so on but another u.s. defense official speaking on condition of anonymity said the forces are made up of
12:20 pm
one hundred military personnel and other personnel who stayed on in jordan after attending and you'll exercise in may and several dozen more have flown in since they're operating from a joint u.s. jordanian military center north of online that americans have used for years and the news about u.s. military personnel so close to syria actual actual boots on the ground suggests an escalation in the u.s. military involvement in the conflict even as washington pushes back on any suggestion of a direct intervention in syria but jordan is not the only place where the u.s. has military presence if we look at syria and the u.s. military presence across the region we see that syria is pretty much surrounded militarily also tension is growing on the border between syria and turkey after several days of shelling this wednesday turkish military chief vouched to respond with more force that is the day after nato said it stood ready to defend turkey important to note one of the reasons why the rebels refused to settle down for
12:21 pm
a negotiated solution through dialogue is that signal that they get that sense that support is on the way that there will be an intervention everybody understands without a negotiated solution the bloodshed will continue so the signal that the rebels are getting including the news about u.s. troops standing by right across the border could be making it much harder to come to that negotiated solution. will news in brief u.s. drone strikes in northwest pakistan that killed at least ten suspected militants four missiles were found or compounds in an area bordering afghanistan that comes days after a massive protest against american drone strikes in pakistan some estimates say the strategy is responsible for hundreds very and it's. visible arrested by police sweet and. no after spending twenty eight hours at a nuclear facility in the country's southwest they were part of a bigger group of twenty members who forced their way into the ring girls react to site footage provided by greenpeace showed people riding bikes within the grounds of the plant now the movement says the action was aimed at highlighting concerns of

poor safety at swedish nuclear sites. the race to the white house seems to be driving a deeper wedge between america and israel over iran's nuclear ambitions president obama is now using all his influence to rein in the israel's increasingly aggressive stance towards to ron paul a stay reports of how wide the division has become. over the years israeli like us have been very careful in expressing their stance towards american politics until now with us election is less than a month away israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has made no bones about who he favors and it is not the rock a bomb that was basically been pushing obama in the united states around. pushing that not that forcing america to do anything that america doesn't want to do but forcing america to accept to shut up in the face of netanyahu is what netanyahu would job obviously does not like and netanyahu has done that as
12:23 pm
well to do that because he knows that there is such that the republicans are totally behind him netanyahu has had very public spats with the obama administration the most recent of which was sparked by his demand that the u.s. sit out the red lines for iran which if crossed would bring military action so far washington's refused prompting a tongue lashing from netanyahu. who. was. wrong but it's already working. at a recent united nations session netanyahu went further he produced the now famous bomb diagram while drawing a red line. never again strength not apologies his outburst appears in an anti obama advertisement that will be broadcast on u.s. networks paid all by an organization called secure america now what it's come down to now in america is if american politician criticizes israel that translates into
12:24 pm
support for quote unquote terrorism traditionally israeli leaders have relied on broad bipartisan support in the united states but netanyahu has had a rocky relationship with the bomber from the start and is ready to take sides with the prime minister he is a republican and his body. and soul netanyahu also seems convinced republican contender mitt romney will take a hard line on iran but netanyahu is perceived strategy looks risky to israelis who fear they were alliance with the u.s. could be in trouble if the incumbent wins especially when it comes to recognizing a palestinian state i think it will come back through the u.n. with all the vote on the recall condition and i think the reverse the american river will be there will not work against it as they worked last year. the result will be you really think. so they show that israelis are more worried
12:25 pm
about losing this strategic alliance with the united states then they are of war with iran however few observers believe there is a real threat of u.s. israeli relations becoming seriously damaged but it is highly likely that the abominate on yahoo relationship will become even more strained should both leaders be reelected fall asleep or in tel aviv now for a short break dimitri said with business news more details on matter all business shuffling iraq today. download the official application to cellphones choose your language stream quality and enjoy your favorites from alzheimer's t.v. is not required to watch all its he only needs your mobile device to watch ati any

12:28 pm
could no one project and give the job to russian companies as a tease nick paul explains. put it seems that exxon mobile has incurred the wrath of baghdad doing a series of deals with the separatists codes in the north of the country nearly a decade on from the us in led invasion of iraq the government is getting its independence and is about to move america's biggest oil flow from the west kona one oil project there are a number of other western oil firms also working in iraq chevron and total for example but they've also done deals with the kurds in the north and this means they should also be excluded from the west project and that pretty much leaves the russians the big question there is which russian company already has interests in iraq is developing the west to feel that the cost of several billions of dollars that's as it does north wish to increase its exposure gazprom you have to like some
12:29 pm
of the other foreign companies also doing deals in the north so really that just leaves rules you have to rules you have to made no comment but of course just russia's biggest state run oil for a wednesday this week president putin the iraqi prime minister he said at the time that he wished to increase russia's role in the iraqi oil industry it looks like he's going to get it will soon be. another pleasant surprise is coming from the u.s. labor department jobless claims for the past week dropped by fits thousand to a lowest level since february two thousand and eight hundred thirty nine thousand now this is also coinciding with a report for the revised months of july august and september which showed that the unemployment rate's altogether fell down to seven point eight percent again the lowest since president obama took office and it's also sticking points of the romney obama debate.
